Together on the one stage, one of the most influentual singer songwriters in contemporary folk music today teamed with an amazing up and coming talent, Ami Williamson.
Ami Williamson
“What do you get when you mix an entertainer with a songwriter? An opera singer with a comedian ? A folk singer with a set of drums ? A show girl with a poet?…..Ami Williamson! – The Canberra Times.
“Ami may be the daughter of one of Australia’s most popular musical Icons, John Williamson, but she stands alone as a brilliant performer and a woman who has something to say in her own right” - Judy Small.
“Ami has created something that’s not quite country, not quite folk, not quite classical and not quite pop, but an exciting mix of all of the above and more.” -Sunday Arts ABC.
Ami has worked in many of the top venues and Festivals in Australia and abroad and has shared the stage with many International artists such as Kristina Olsen, Hans Tressink, Joan Carden, John Butler, The Angels, The Whitlams, Eric Bogle, Beccy Cole, Angry Anderson to name a few.
Early this year Ami “Stole the show” (Sydney Morning Herald) in The Musical “Quambatook”.
Ami is one of those rare female singers. While her roots are firmly in the tradition of singer/songwriter, her richly diverse upbringing had Ami taking the stage not only in opera and classical, but also touring with her father performing her own material.
Ami has recently returned from entertaining the troops in the Solomon Islands and in Iraq and Afghanistan with Angry Anderson and Tania Zaetta. ABC’s “Australian Story” accompanied the performers on tour
and filmed a documentary which was shown in 2 parts in May 2008 on ABC1.
Judy Small
Judy Small is one of the most influential singer-songwriters to come out of Australia. Her songs have been covered by folk music luminaries like Ronnie Gilbert, Eric Bogle, The McCalmans, The Corries, Charlie King and Priscilla Herdman.
Judy Small is an Australian folk music icon. Her songs are sung all over the English-speaking world in concert halls, at political rallies and around campfires, and after more than 30 years in the music business she is still going strong, although she sings less frequently since she went back to her second love, the law in 1997.
As a performer, Judy Small is unique. Her powerfully political performances are spiced with humour, and have been described as “more like an evening with a favourite aunt than a concert”. She says that if audiences come away thinking about issues, then that is a worthwhile performance, but only if they come away feeling as though they’ve had a really good night out is it a successful performance. She has ten albums; hundreds of songs and a song book to her credit.
In recent years, Judy has cut back her performing schedule to take on the world of the law. She is a family lawyer in Melbourne working for Victoria Legal Aid. But this does not mean that she has retired from singing and writing songs. She is still singing at special events and festivals and is delighted to be able to combine two of the loves of her life, music and the law. In both fields she sees herself as working for peace, social justice and equality.
